The Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies was set up by Royal Charter for the study of British defence and overseas policy. It is the oldest institute of its kind in the world, having been established in 1831 and given its first charter in 1860, but its outlook is international, contemporary and forward looking, as it must be, it being no longer sensible to view defence exclusively from a national standpoint. As well as strategy, the economics of defence, and the influence of science and technology on the development of weapons, it studies nuclear deterrence, disarmament, peace keeping, arms control, the role of the military in modern society, the utility of armed force as a political instrument and the prevention of war. The Institute publishes a quarterly Journal, reports of its seminars and defence studies, all of which are widely read, and is admirably fitted to supply the direction and editorship of this important Defence Year Book.
